Coming Home
Words and Music by Tom May
(Originally released on the Vignette album. Coming Home (out of print) 1982)
The rains upon the window, are tracin’ out a trail
To the postmarks that I’ve called home and some long forgotten mail
Letters left unanswered, from the places that I’ve been
Streetcars, face, memories and friends
So do the sidewalks still whisper softly to the people passing by
Do they still make those long walks alone
Tell them that you saw me, in a café by the shore
And I said that by next year, I’m coming home
Up north it’s getting colder, and the short sleeves disappear
I start another journey as school starts another year
But I can’t help but remember, and wish that I was there
No schedules, no commitments, and no cares
So do the sidewalks still whisper softly to the people passing by
Do they still make those long walks alone
Tell them that you saw me, in a café by the shore
And I said that by next year, I’m coming home
So hello to my friends in Boston
I envy you the fall
And wintertime in Toronto is my favorite time of all
The catfish are a bitin’ in that old Nebraska stream
And old home and kind faces fill my dreams
So do the sidewalks still whisper softly to the people passing by
Do they still make those long walks alone
Tell them that you saw me, in a café by the shore
And I said that by next year, I’m coming home
